 Home > Our Programs > Unseeded Acreage Feature

The Unseeded Acreage feature provides coverage of $50 per eligible claim acre. This feature does not provide payment on every reported wet acre. The deadline to submit an unseeded acreage claim is June 25.

Eligible claim acres are the acres you normally seed and insure that remain unseeded by June 20 due to excessive spring moisture. A five per cent deductible of the acres normally seeded is applied to quarters with acres too wet to seed.

Normally, seeded acres are determined using your total cultivated acres multiplied by your historic
seeding intensity. Seeding intensity is the percentage of the four-year annual average of your
seeded acres compared to cultivated acres. Insured acres are determined as a percentage (or insurance intensity) of acres insured compared to acres that could have been insured.

The insurance intensity applied is the greater of your:
(1) current year’s annual insurance intensity;
(2) previous year’s annual insurance intensity; or
(3) four-year average insurance intensity.

For eligibility purposes, Crop Insurance calculates a whole farm claim separate from a summerfallow claim, as all acres of previous year’s summerfallow are expected to be seeded in the current year. The Unseeded Acreage claim is paid on the greater of the two calculations.

Eligible claim acres will be considered as seeded for the calculation of the annual seeding intensity. This buffers the effect of not being able to seed large acres in any given year.

Your Unseeded Acreage claim may be reduced or denied if your loss is significantly greater than other producers in your immediate area due to your management practices.

Acres reported as too wet to seed and included in an Unseeded Acreage claim are not eligible for any subsequent coverage including greenfeed and wildlife.

Example

You farm 1,000 acres. Your four-year average indicates that you seed 85% of your land base. This year, you are able to seed 600 of your 1,000 acres.
