Q: What should I be looking out for this year?

A: There are many different factors that can reduce yields. Producers should actively monitor their crops and take necessary control measures. Producers should closely monitor fields and apply required measures in a timely fashion.

For example, there are a variety of options that may reduce the potential for grasshopper losses including:

  • timely application of pesticides
  • seeding less susceptible crops (ie. oats, peas, mustard), particularly on stubble fields where eggs have been laid
  • early seeding or fall-seeding crops
  • guard strips of less susceptible crops

In addition to chemical measures, commercial producers may consider cultural control alternatives and are expected to implement all economically feasible options.

Crops that suffer serious damage in spite of prevention measures may be salvaged for feed before they are destroyed. Contact your customer service office before you destroy or put any crop to an alternate use.
