Home > FAQ >Short On Pasture

Q. Because of the lack of moisture, I am short of pasture. I would like to pasture fields I normally cut for tame hay. What are my options?

A. Insured tame hay fields that are normally cut can be grazed at the producer's discretion. Should the customer wish to put the insured acres to an alternate use such as grazing, they must notify Crop Insurance five days prior to turning the cattle out in the field. Crop Insurance adjusters will determine where the producer should place enclosures which keep the cattle out.

At a later date, when the haying would normally take place, the adjuster will do clippings to determine the production from the field. Failure to notify Crop Insurance prior to grazing a field may result in denial of the claim.
