Crop Insurance 1974-89

1974-75
- The Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation was established by Order-in-Council
on March 29 to be a corporate structure with staff, policies and procedures
to service the ever-increasing number of policy holders insured by the Saskatchewan
Crop Insurance Board.
- In 1975, irrigation and extended coverage on unseeded summerfallow introduced.
1979
- Fifteen crops were insurable.
1980-81
- Participation in Crop Insurance increased to 42,850 premium-earning contracts.
- In 1981, the reseeding benefit was introduced.
1984
- Winter wheat coverage was added to the program.
1985
- Pedigreed seed insurance, honey insurance and the individual coverage option
were added and the total number of insurable crops was 18.
- 1985 was also a drought year, generating 77,000 claims.
1986
- In 1986, the 25 anniversary of Crop Insurance, 77% of Saskatchewan farmers
were insured (49,000 contracts insuring 23 million acres).
- Triticale was introduced as an insurable crop and the Establishment Benefit
for fall seeded crops was added.
1987
- Major customer service enhancements were put into place. Area offices were
renamed customer service offices and the corporation's head office moved to
Melville in March.
1988-89
- In 1988, 93,000 claims were registered and indemnity payments of $466 million
dollars were recorded.
- In 1989, the corporation administered the ad-hoc "Canada-Saskatchewan
Greenfeed Program" under which 10,000 customers received nearly $20 million
in forage drought assistance.
- Indemnities totalled $450 million.
- The Variable Price Option was added, providing producers with protection
from upward movements in grain prices, such as occurred in 1988.
