Winterkill coverage is a separate option for fall rye and winter wheat. For crops seeded in 2010, winterkill coverage is $20 per acre for fall rye and $25 per acre for winter wheat. Winterkill claims in spring 2011 are subject to an eight per cent deductible per legal land description. Producers have until August 25 to select winterkill insurance for fall rye and winter wheat crops to be seeded by September 15. Premiums are charged in the year of establishment.
Winterkill coverage for winter wheat seeded in the fall of 2010 will be available in all risk zones regardless of the stubble type into which the crop is seeded. However, the stubble type does determine if the acres are charged the low or high-risk premium rate. Customers with winterkill coverage will be asked several risk assessment questions when reporting acres of fall seeded crops which will determine the risk category of the acres.
Yield-loss coverage can be selected in the spring of the harvest year. If you do not select winterkill coverage, fall crops to be insured for yield-loss are subject to a spring inspection to assess establishment.
Winterkill is not an insurable cause of loss for crops seeded in the fall of 2009 if winterkill insurance was not selected by August 25, 2009.
