Seeding Deadlines

To be insurable, any seeded crop is expected to reach a reasonable level of maturity before the first fall frost date in your area. If your crop is seeded by the final date liability is accepted (see following table), but too late to be reasonably expected to mature, liability may be reduced or denied. Consider the average days to maturity for each variety in conjunction with the normal first fall frost date in your area. The Ministry of Agriculture’s “Varieties of Grain Crops 2013” contains maturity ranges by crop and variety, and first fall frost information is available at your customer service office or in Maps.

Average Maturity in Days Final Date Liability is Accepted
Greenfeed June 30
90 June 20
95 June 15
100 June 10
105 June 5
110 May 31
115 May 26
120 May 21
Chickpeas (all classes) May 21
Fall Crops September 15

The final dates that liability will be accepted are general, based on the areas with the latest average first fall frost, and reflect the latest date that a crop could be seeded. In most areas, crops need to be seeded earlier than these dates to be expected to mature. Talk to your customer service office for assistance in determining seeding deadlines for insurable crops.

Seeding Deadline Determination Example

According to the “Varieties of Grain Crops 2013” publication, the relative maturity of AC Barrie (the check variety) hard red spring wheat is 100 days. Assume the variety you are seeding is AC Intrepid. The maturity rating for AC Intrepid is -3, which means three days earlier than AC Barrie or 97 days.

For the purpose of this example, assume the first fall frost date falls in the August 31 to September 6 range. Using September 6 and counting back 97 days means that June 1 would be the final date liability would be accepted for AC Intrepid hard red spring wheat.

SCIC will not accept liability for any spring-seeded crops seeded after June 20.
